18th Championship Show - 19th April 2009

Mr Craig Leyden (Hardroad - AUST)

I would like to thank the ACT and Districts Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their 18th championship show. To judge this show is an honour. This club should be recognised for the teamwork that I saw displayed,

to make the weekend run smoothly. There are too many to thank, I will thank the club as a team, please accept my gratitude.

I thoroughly enjoyed judging today, and reliving the memory whilst writing the critiques.

Reading each one will give you a feel for my interpretation of the breed, some bang on about particular topics in the breed, and I bang on about others.

On the way to this show I went to the races at Eagle Farm, something I like to do, it draws comparison on the importance of breeding, training and putting the horse in work, feeding, and presenting it to be able to come first. This is not unlike today.

In particular at the end of the day I saw the exhibits that competed for their class in show, and was pleased to be able to congratulate them on their achievements, knowing the hard work that they have put in to get there. The competition is stiff.

Most like to read “the mouth report” of the judge, inverted canines or missing premolars/molars occurred in the ring on only a few exhibits which is very promising.

Only a few exhibits has short outer front toe. More regular were short tails, or light eye or longer coats.

My interpretation on where the breed is heading is covered in my critique.

Baby Puppy Bitch (12ent 4ab)

1st Yates TIAMOSTAFF LITTLE TYLER

(Rayonnoire The Nomad x Ch Yantabula Top Gun)

Nice type, promising head shape, correct ear, dark eye, tight lip, good bone, not over done in body, correct tail set, moved freely,  This is very comforting that a baby of this quality is coming through the system, let’s hope she holds together.

BABY PUPPY IN SHOW over her brother

2nd McCoy JODEN BRASS IN POCKET

(Joden Bold Ruler x Ch Joden Wicked Game)

Another promising youngster of nice type, head shape promising, dark eye, tight lip, short coupled, good rib, level top line, preferred the tail and set of first place, should come in good for size.

3rd  McCaughey SPARPARTNER ANASTASIA

(Waree Nuggets Prize x Boldhart Kissy Suzuki)

Finer headed baby bitch of good type, finer in bone, moved a bit straight in the front, has all the looks of a slower developer at this stage.

4th Ronjuade Knls RONJUADE JINGLE BELL ROCK

(Ch Novastaff Ferrol Errol x Ronjuade Bella DeBall)

5th Sibraa TONKARTIN TIN LIZZY

(Ch Cairford Tell No Lies x Rualfinn Prestige Paws)

Minor Puppy Bitch (3ent 0 ab)

1st Heard TOPLOADER BLACK MARIA

(Johnny Dexta x Likalot Strike a Pose)

My award to the most promising of all the puppy classes today. Absolute stunner, top quality, beautiful bitch head developing of correct proportion, for a pup.  Dark eye, clean lip, neat ears, dark nail, short coat, nicely balanced all over, already the lean muscling I was after coming on, must be a hell of a pup at home because she runs somewhere that’s for sure, correct tail set with pump handle tail, moved well, one for the future. MINOR PUPPY IN SHOW.

2nd Wolf  BOLDHART IRRESISTIBLE IRIS

(Gr Ch Boldhart Mo Macackie x Boldhart Lucretia Borgia)

Strong headed bitch, on the bottom end of the height, neat ear, shorter in neck, carries her top line well, moved ok.

3rd Ross SUREGRIP JACINDA MAGIC

(Joden Black Zulu x Powerbilt The Dragonfly),

Puppy Bitch (3ent 0ab)

1st Osborne PEPSTAFF LETS GET LOUD

(Aust/NZ Ch Warfare Last of the Mohicans Imp NZ x Ch Tykabul Black Dahlia)

Nice head shape, with good expression, dark eye, neat ear, strong width of underjaw, enough chest, dark nail, moved well although falls a bit away at the croup, good length of body. PUPPY IN SHOW over her brother.

2nd Birkeland CASTLEBAR LUCKY STAR-AI

(Gr Ch Jamelkur Cruzin Star x Castlebar Auspicious)

Nice head shape, dark eye neat ear, pushed hard for first, better in the top line than first place, preferred the chest and length of first, still both puppies and developing will continue.

3rd Thomas  BURNEMUP AHELLOVA KNIGHT

(Ch Saxxon Knight to Remember x Pennyflower Goldn Bundy)

Junior Bitch (14ent 1 ab)

1st Sing CHERABAH IRON BILLY

(Aust/NZ Ch Belleden Devil OV Orion x Cherabah Iron Maiden)

Feminine bitch of correct head proportions, nice style of bitch, well placed dark round eye, tight lip, neat ears well placed, good bone and leaner muscle, correct tail set and carriage on the move. Moves nicely. The comfortable presence of the handler transmits to the dog, then to the judge, no gimmicks here. The further placed she went the more I liked her.

JUNIOR IN SHOW and RCC

2nd Jones BASSBRED CHIQUITTA

(Ch Jamelkur Street Lethal x Bassbred Black Pearl)

I liked the head shape, the right style of bitch, enough depth and width throughout, preferred the tail and coat of first place, moved and handled well. There’s upside to this one, I don’t think she’s finished developing yet.

3rd Young BENSHIRE DIVA DOLL

(Ch Mishmax Little Gladiator x Benshire Cougars Magic)

Another bitch that caught my eye, has a lot of virtue, strong in head, deep underjaw, good top line and adequate angulation, and could tend to look heavy easy but other virtue brought her up. The handler was gracious when I said if she walked/ free run this one to keep longer leaner lighter muscle, and stay away from the heavy weightlifter look, she’d step into the competition.

4th Laws SHKIRI SHOW TIME

(Gr Ch Highbourne Luskin Star x Ch Shkiri Prissy Paris)

5th Oldenburg STAFFHAUS LOVE N MERCY

(Cherbah Thdivil Nblack x Staffyhaus Simply Black)

Intermediate Bitch (7ent 1 ab)

1st McBride BROHEZ SHEZA PEARLA

(Ch Stoneheart Tom Foolery x Ch Jeolena Black Dahlia)

Style and weight I like, nice head not too large, good front, not overdone, shorter in back but with a good top line this one, moves well, great expression, dark round eye, INTERMEDIATE IN SHOW over her brother.

2nd Burns JAGARRA SPITTING IMAGE

(Eng/Aust Gr Ch Koendidda Umrum x Ch Chablakmor Vodka On Ice)

Powerful is the word here, a heavier caste than first place but everything is there, rippling in muscle, tuck goes up forever, good top line, with all the right running gear in now a smaller package. Powerful mover.

3rd McFadden SUNTAURO BOUNDTOASTOUND

(Boldmore Shenanigans Imp UK x Ch Koendidda Moppie May)

Nice head shape, dark eye, ear good, dark nail, short coat, preferred the body type of first

4th Bawden CH CASTLEBAR STRIP SEARCH

(Gr Ch Jamelkur Cruizin Star x Castlebar Auspicious)

5th Yates TIAMOSTAFF ACE OF SPADES

(Ch Lokstoknstaf Iron Star x Silvens One Ov Ours)

Australian Bred Bitch (14ent  2 ab)

1st Butler/O`Brien TUATAHI TRIBAL TATTOO

(Ch Powerbuilt Dark Agent x Staffbach Black Diva)

Very feminine bitch, head shape of correct proportions, dark round eye, tight lip, neat ears, well put together, bang on the minimum weight you could have for this one, I’d hazard a guess at 30 pound/15inch, well conditioned with it, she moves fantastically. I like your spirit lady; you pushed hard for the top honours, you weren’t far off it.

AUSTRALIAN BRED IN SHOW.

2nd Osbourne CH TYKABUL BLACK DAHLIA

(Ch Tuskstock It Wasn’t Me x Ch Tykabul High Maintenance)

Another well put together bitch, Courser in the head than others shown by this kennel, but still carries the virtues in a nice package, good angulation, moved and handled well.

3rd Long/Korn CH CHABLAKMOR VODKA ON ICE

(Chablakmor Devils Brew x Ch Jeneld Ice Maiden)

Pied, incredible tuck, nicely muscled, bit more than what I was after than the first two, but you wouldn’t go past it, good neck angulation on this one which is very important to our breed, moved and handled well.

4th Pratt CH PRATTSTAFF CARAMEL CROWN

(Eng/Aust Gr Ch  Koendidda Umrum x Pratstaff Toffee Pop)

5th McCoy CH JODEN DELTA DAWN

(Ch Treasach Paddys Brew x Ch Joden Cracklin Rosie)

Open Bitch (13ent 1 ab)

1st Laws SHKIRI PRISSY PARIS

(Ch Highbourne Baryshnikov x Ch Cherabah High Acclaim)

Tough class, stunning bitch in a smaller package that kept shining through! Feminine head of correct proportions, well placed neat ear, dark eye, tight lip,  head set well on neck blending beautifully into shoulders, tight feet, dark nail, good spring of rib just long enough in loin, correct tail set, good for height and weight, well muscled, moved like she owned the ring, and, today she did! OPEN IN SHOW, BCC and BIS.

2nd Frazer CH RAYONNOIRE CANNY BAIRN

(Takillas Taboo Noire Imp UK x Ch Knockon Bittersweet mp UK)

Very nice bitch, correct head, dark eye, neat ear, well proportioned throughout, good tail, exceptional overall confirmation. Everyone is working pretty hard to knock over these top spots, lost out today on conditioning on the move.

3rd  Cairns/Hanley CH DOOBAG AKISS OV VENOM

(Ch Lockstaff Black Venom x Borstaff Tullie Tubbie)

Nice type of bitch, deep stop, although touch rounder in the head than I was after, still pleasing, bit heavier type than first and second but with good tuck up, well muscled, adequate angulation, moved and handled well, starting to get picky at this level, spirited smiles between the handler and I here.

(Rayonnoire The Nomad x Ch Yantabula Top Gun)

Promising head shape, touch of wrinkle at this stage nothing to worry about, neat ear, dark eye, good bone, not overdone in body, moves well enough for a baby, much of the same virtues of his sister in baby puppy bitches. OPP BABY OF BREED

2nd Gribble PENNYFLOWER STICKS AND STONES

(Eastaff Causin Chaos Imp Uk x Pennyflower Justice)

I enjoyed this one as well, promising head shape, dark eye, and neat ear; prefer the length if the first place, moved freely

3rd Jennings/Birse JENRANA BLACK DOUGLAS

(Warefare Mind Games Imp NZ x Jenrana Pixie Dust)

Not as developed in head at this age, these are babies, nice dark eye, dark nail, well up for bone, not to long in body, good angulation, moved and handled well for a baby.

OPP MINOR PUPPY IN SHOW

2nd Heard TOPLOADER  LITTLE BRICK

(Johnny Dexta x Likalot Strike a Pose)

Another promising minor, once again the same as first place the head is just what it should be at this age, neat ear, dark eye, well balanced dog all over, a lot of upside to this one for later, slower in developing than his sister, but I cant shake that feeling you’re going to have a whole lot of fun with him!.

Puppy Dog (2ent 1 ab)

1st Osbourne PEPSTAFF LATEST NEWS

(Aust/NZ CH Warefare Last of the Mohicans Imp NZ x Ch Tykabul Black Dahlia)

Good strong head developing, strong underjaw, clean enough in lip, with attention to his exercise he should progress well, good mover for this age, pump handle tail, dog equivalent of the bitches I’ve been after, so there’s nothing wrong with getting first out of one here. OPP PUPP IN SHOW

2nd Young BENSHIRE R U KIDDING ME

(Ch Mishmax Little Gladiator x Benshire Cougars Magic)

Slightly larger dog,  strong head shape, small neat ears, good cheek muscles, dark eyes, looser in lip than first place, moved well, less condition than first, the handler is smiling about the condition speech coming her way as with her bitch, but once again you do have a nice exhibit here.
